Roxburgh Gorge Trail Information

The Roxburgh Gorge Trail is one of the ‘Great Rides’ of the Nga Haerenga, New Zealand Cycle Trail. At 34km long, it makes an ideal one day ride if you start from Clyde, just over an hours drive from Queenstown. In our opinion, at a grade 2-3, it has enough surface variety and interest to satisfy all types of bikers, from a relative novice (we would not advise this for beginner cyclists) to an expert and enough breathtaking scenery to satisfy everyone. This is likely to become one of the best one day rides in New Zealand. The trail follows the Roxburgh Gorge from Alexandra, alongside the Clutha River, to the Roxburgh Dam. The middle section of the gorge was too steep to build a trail effectively so it’s currently accessed by boat only. This 10km boat ride enhances the whole experience with that totally different perspective you get from looking at land from on water. It’s not just a shuttle service, it’s a 30 minute sight seeing trip with informative commentary about the gold mining history of the area.

You can start the trail from either end but will have a very different experience due to the nature of the landscape. Starting from Alexandra, you have an easy acclimation to the trail, with the first few kms of gentle undulations before you hit the first climb but finish the trail with a long series of switchback turns to get to the top of the trail high above the Roxburgh Dam. Starting from the dam, you have a steep climb to the top and a steep and winding descent to start, but finish with gentle undulations into Alexandra.

No matter which end of the trail you start, this trail is stunning, and gets great reviews. Ride it as a day trip from Queenstown or add on the Clutha Gold Trail to make a lovely 2 to 3 day Clutha Canyon Combo option or combine with the Around the Mountains Trail for a week long trip. Of course, if you have a private group of 6 or more, we’ll arrange almost anything else you want!
