Clutha Gold Trail Information

The Clutha Gold Trail is one of the ‘Great Rides’ of the Nga Haerenga, New Zealand Cycle Trail and links in with the Otago Rail Trail and the Roxburgh Gorge Trail. At 73km long, it’s an easy walking and cycling trail along side the Clutha River between Lawrence and Roxburgh, only 2 hours away from Queenstown. Open year-round, this smooth and wide, well-formed trail requires moderate fitness. Whether you walk it or ride it, this trail is full of variety, from undulating to flat to meandering, different around every corner.

No matter which end of the trail you start, this trail offers a real rural heartland experience combined with a wealth of fascinating local gold mining history. Start at the Roxburgh Dam to follow the Clutha River downstream. Start at Lawrence and head back to Roxburgh to add on the Roxburgh Gorge Cycle Trail or Otago Rail Trail. Ride it in sections or, if you’re very fit, ride it in one day, it’s up to you. So much diversity, history and scenery in such a small area. We run tours along this trail in combination with the Roxburgh Gorge Trail into our Clutha Canyon Combo. This combo is combined with the Around the Mountains Trail to create a week long experience. Of course, if you have a private group of 6 or more, we’ll arrange almost anything you want!
